October financials
Taking a cue from my good friend Steve Eley at EscapePod, I’ll be sharing monthly donation information. No, we’re not a non-profit (heck, we don’t even know what we are at this point), but since we’re asking for your hard earned cash, you ought to know where it’s going.
In October, your generous contributions totaled $153.86. Some of you donated more than once, which is great. Most of you donated the default $9.99, though a handful chose to lower the amount. No issues with that. We (and the authors) are just happy to have a contribution.
The “fees” on these contributions came to $10.54, an amount which was absorbed by Podiobooks.com. This is a cost of doing business, and one I’m not comfortable passing on to the authors.
The total amount due our authors came to $76.93, or exactly half of the original contribution amount. The authors who have “completed” books received payment a few days ago. Those who are “in progress” have their monies held in reserve. In the event an author does not complete the book, any and all donations collected will be returned to the donors. Seems the fair way to do it.
Lastly, Podiobooks.com took in $66.39 of the donations. We debated blowing it on hookers and beer, but decided to be a little more prudent in the end. We still need to pay our hosting provider, plus there are some cool tools we could sure use which would help make your experience on the site a little better. So for now, we’re holding on to the cash, watching the interest increase by literally pennies every month.
I’ll update you again in a few weeks when the November numbers are final. In the mean time, thanks for listening, and tell a friend. Hell, tell fifty.

How much does the cost of your hosting for podiobooks compare to what you need for the Dragon Page?, or are they a part of the same er..bundle or whatever it’s termed?.

Podiobooks.com is about as completely separate from tDP, SoSF and anything else I’m working on as I can get. However, tDP is currently carrying the load for the web-pages for PB.com. It *is not*, however, supporting the hosting of the media files, which is where the big money lies.
Right now, the boys at LibSyn are giving us a few months of media file hostings and bandwidth without charging any money up front. We’ll need to cover the costs eventually, but they are seeing what sort of brother-in-law deal they can give us based on real traffic numbers.
So we’ll keep this cash in the bank for a bit.

Is there a way for someone to solely contribute to Podiobooks.com, as opposed to contributing through an author to podiobooks, where you need to share the dough? Just wondering.
