Dreaming of Deliverance

Please welcome R.E. Chambliss to the site with her new book, Dreaming of Deliverance:

Five years ago when Lindsay Paulson, a naive college student and talented distance runner, was 18, she was convicted of drug smuggling. Now, halfway through a 10-year prison sentence, she begins having what seem to be dreams, in which she leaves her cell in the night and visits another reality called Trae. Dreaming of Deliverance tells of Lindsay’s experiences both in Trae, where she finds herself among people enslaved by terrifying creatures, and in prison where she tries to make sense of what’s happening in her sleep: Is she actually escaping from prison somehow or is she losing her mind?

The first five episodes are in the default feed with more coming. Or take a custom feed and control how often new episodes are sent to you.

Renee, you’ve done a great job with this book! I am enjoying it very much, thanks for bringing it to Podiobooks.

  4. R.E. Chambliss Says:

Thanks so much, Gail! I’m having a great time doing the episodes, and I’m thrilled that you are enjoying them!

  5. Sacha Says:

What a great book! A wonderful story, great characters and Renee has a beautiful voice to podcast her book. All those elements just work great together!

I am hooked and I can’t wait for the coming deliverances of episodes :)

  6. R.E. Chambliss Says:

Thank you, Sacha! It’s very exciting for me to be able to share this story with other people. I’m really glad you’re enjoying it!

    Take care,

  7. craig Says:

I generally don’t like to review a podcast till it’s complete, but DoD is so good, I just can’t wait. This is a fresh, well woven story, with credible and empathetic characters, set in dual realities which are adroitly constructed. There is an element of fantasy which spices the mix, while avoiding completely the cliches which liter that genre. Renee’s voice is strong and confident, emoting sufficient feeling to expertly lead the listener along. The sound and technical components are journeyman, and never detract for the story. I for one am looking forward to the concluding episodes and to more of Renee’s excellent writing; strong work.

  8. R.E. Chambliss Says:

Thank you, Craig! Wow! I really don’t know what to say, except to reiterate that I love doing these podcasts so there will certainly be more to come. It’s a story that means a lot to me and I’m so glad people are listening and enjoying it! Thanks again!

    Take care,

    Renee

  9. Kenn Crawford Says:

I love this story. It is well written and the narrating is great. Renee’s voice is pleasant, easy to listen to and quickly draws you into the story. Characters and storyline are well developed.
I listened to all 9 episodes in 3 days and like a drug addict who needs another fix, I can’t wait for another fix of Dreaming of Deliverance.
Well done, Renee. I hope you get the remaining chapters posted soon. ;)

    ~Kenn

  10. R.E. Chambliss Says:

Thanks so much, Kenn! I’m trying to get one episode up a week, but I had to do some rerecording, which set me back a little. I uploaded episode 10 on Saturday and episode 11 this morning, so I’m hoping that will keep any withdrawals at bay until episode 12 comes out next week! ;)

Anyway, it’s wonderful that you’re enjoying it and thank you so much for writing this review! I really appreciate it!

    Take care,

    Renee

  11. Patrick Lewis Says:

I gave this a shot, thinking it might not be my cup of tea and am glad to say that I was totally wrong.

I really like this book and recommend it! Renee has come out swinging with what I believe is her first book.

It is much more genre and action oriented then the promo lets on. This is not to say that Lindsay is Indiana Jones, but dire things are happening in Trae and it’s far from a cookie cutter, swords-and-sandals fantasy realm. I also appreciate that she used place and people names that I can actually pronounce instead of fake-Gallic names with lots of apostrophes and dashes. It makes the whole thing much easier to follow.

  12. JaneAtPlay Says:

Renee, wow! I was a bit tepid from the synopsis but gave Dreaming of Deliverance a shot anyway and I’m so glad I did. The first dozen chapters, and I’m thinking okay – intersting story, characters are growing on me, but what’s the big deal…and then bam… you tear at my heart. Death! Danger! Evil! Now I’m fully invested in these folks, waiting for the next episode (and the next shoe) to drop. Thank you for a wonderful tale. Looking forward to the rest.

  13. R.E. Chambliss Says:

Patrick- Thank you so much! I’m really glad you gave it a try and are enjoying it! One of the great things about creating a story yourself, is that you get to make the calls about names, etc. And while I love imaginative stories, I like to do things my own way so I tried to make the setting, characters, and story unique.

Jane- Our reactions to stories are personal and subjective, of course, but I need to be invested with the characters before the big action begins–it makes it all mean more to me somehow. That’s not to say I consciously did DoD that way, because developing the story has been a very unconscious, organic process, but I’m guessing that’s why it doesn’t start with a huge bang. Anyway, I’m thrilled that you are enjoying the story and don’t want to give anything away, but I will say the stakes are going to continue to go up. Thanks so much for your thoughts.

By the way based on what you both have said, I’m probably going to have a new promo soon.

Thanks again, everyone, for listening and commenting! If you have any questions or additional input, please post them here or on my blog: http://reneewrite.blogspot.com/ I will definitely respond!

I can’t express how exciting and surreal it is to learn that people are listening and becoming invested in the story. “Great” doesn’t even begin to cover it!

  14. R.E. Chambliss Says:

Hi! I just wanted to let you all know that I’ve contributed a signed copy of the print version of Dreaming of Deliverance to “The Boom Effect”, a fundraiser for Sonic Boom, the daughter of Podiobooks.com founder Tee Morris.

As I’m sure you’re already aware, Tee lost his wife Natalie unexpectedly earlier this month, and Phillipa Ballentine has set up an online auction to raise money for 5-year-old Sonic Boom’s future college expenses.

So if you don’t want to wait the several more months that it’s going to take to finish the podcast novel version of Dreaming of Deliverance (we’re half-way through at this point) go to http://www.theboomeffect.org/ and bid on the print version. I will ship the book anywhere in the world–including (Sacha and Kenn) Nova Scotia and the Netherlands!

You can find out what’s going to happen to Lindsay, and at the same time help some great real-life people during this tragic time.

    Thanks so much!

    -Renee

Wow, running a 50K with no food or water. Can’t wait to see how this turns out.

Barry (who is trying to get up the nerve to do his first 50K….)

  16. R.E. Chambliss Says:

Thanks, Barry! Do you have a race in mind? Good luck with it all!

  17. Barry Bounous Says:

Haven’t decided. Prefer to run in the dirt when possible. Have done 4 road marathons and lot’s of 20s on & off road. 50 yrs old, never broken 4 hours though last year did my personal best. Still working on it. Any run’s you’d suggest? I live in northern Utah.

  18. R.E. Chambliss Says:

Wow, that’s great! I prefer trail running as well. But my farthest race was a 10-miler. I don’t have super long distances in common with either you or Lindsay. Have you seen Julie Berg’s blog? She writes about various ultra marathons. Here’s a link: http://julieberg.blogspot.com/

  19. Drea Says:

I’m really enjoying this story, and am eagerly awaiting each new addition.

It’s a good thing the A/C kicked on when it did, while listening to part 24 at work :) Whew!

  20. Drea Says:

Oh, and have a great time in Africa! That’s an amazing opportunity!

  21. CindyCam Says:

I’m half way through reading the book, and I am tuning in to the the podcast for Chapter 18. Creative descriptions and characters come to life as I listen to Renee’s voice. This podcast enhances an already suspenseful read!

  22. R.E. Chambliss Says:

Thanks so much, Drea! Maybe I should have warned people to listen to Ep 24 with earbuds! I had an incredible time in Africa, but now I’m home again and ready to get back to the podcasts. I’ve recorded Ep 25 and should have it edited and up by the weekend.

Hi Cindy- I’m so glad you’re enjoying both the print version and the podcasts. There are lots here that are terrific to listen to. Let me know if you need any recommendations!

  23. Literock Says:

This just so happens to be the first podcast novel I have listened to as intended…. serially… lol. I will admit that I subscribed accidentally, thinking it complete but was shocked when the “you’ve caught up with the author” came on at about episode 15. I have been faithfully downloading weekly since and find just what I was afraid of in listening to these novels before complete. I CAN’T WAIT!!! I have zero patience. I’m going to buy the book… I just can’t take it.

Masterful writing Ms. Chambliss!! I’m enthralled and look forward to finishing in print…. when it gets here.

  24. R.E. Chambliss Says:

I wish I could podcast faster, Literock! Sorry to leave you hanging–Ep 15 was a while ago! I hope you’ll enjoy the print version. Thanks so much for ordering it! And huge thanks for commenting here. I so appreciate it!

  25. Gail Says:

    Finished! Congratulations!

These endings seem so abrupt after weeks of collecting episodes one at a time.
This story has been worth the wait. I’ll go listen now to find out how many questions I have left over!

  26. CB Says:

One of the best examples of world building I’ve ever seen. Dreaming of Deliverance takes fantasy fiction out of the Tolkien shadow and presents a modern and gripping love story. I was hooked from the start and satisfied at the end.

  27. JaneAtPlay Says:

Renee, I’m going to miss these characters! So glad to hear the adventure will continue. While full cast audio is a huge production challenge, I think it ‘covers’ a multitude of loose-writing sins. Not to say that there are not many excellently written AND produced audio-dramas, a straight read, to me, is a greater risk. The quality of your writing (and editing) shines through and your narration was obviously an act of love – I think it was flawless. Thanks for presenting your work in this format.

  28. Monica Hughes Says:

Loved the book and the narration. I didn’t want it to end. Can’t wait for a sequel. So many un-answered questions. Great job Renee. The imagery was so well done as well as a well crafted tale and unforgettable characters.

  29. R.E. Chambliss Says:

Thank you, Gail! It’s strange for me too, not to be working on the next episode, after all of this time of putting them together. If you have any questions you want to pass on to me, feel free to do so!

Wow, CB, thanks! That’s an amazing comparison. I did try to create a unique world and am so glad you enjoyed it!

Jane- Huge thanks for the compliment. I think of myself as a writer first, so I spend tons of time on both writing and editing. As for the narration, I do love the story, so I’m glad that came across in the reading. Thanks again!

Monica- Well you know I’m happy to talk with you about it any time! I might even answer some of your questions! Thank you for all of your support throughout this process!

  30. David Says:

Congratulations to Renee on getting a completed product out there! Her narration is very good. I only made it through the first 10 episodes, though. I ended up unsubscribing from the book for a few reasons.

The main character is well-developed, but the secondary characters felt very one-dimensional to me (maybe this changes in the last two-thirds of the book). Secondly, I was intrigued by the world of Trae, but information about the world came too slowly for it to really pull me in. The information came largely through “data dump” conversations with secondary characters, which I found a bit tedious (such as the man walking Lindsay through the house in Parl (sp?), and the conversation following her encounter with the Loche (sp?) outside the cabin). Thirdly, the flow of the narrative was frequently hindered by overwriting; for example, the narrator would describe a character’s mental state, but it added nothing since the mental state could be easily inferred from 1) the characterization already provided and 2) what Renee had the characters say or do just before the description. The author should get out of her characters’ way sometimes; she writes them so clearly that the narration is sometimes unnecessary! :)

The premise of the book is really interesting, and I loved Renee’s audio narration, but the secondary characters and the narration didn’t pull me into the story very well. I hope she keeps at it, maybe getting a few more sets of eyes on it for editing, and I hope to hear more from her!

  31. skeemer Says:

I very much enjoyed this story and the storytelling. But I hate that after such an enjoyable and fun tale, I listen to the last two episodes and feel like absolute crap. Because of how well written and read it is, I’m eager to hear the sequel, but I’m also terrified that it will do the same thing, take me to great heights and then dash it all on the rocks at the end.

  32. R.E. Chambliss Says:

    Hi David-

Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts. I’m sorry the writing and storytelling didn’t work better for you. I appreciate you giving DoD a try. :o )

I’m sorry to depress you, skeemer! When the time comes, I hope you feel okay about following along with the sequel. I don’t want to say too much here, because I don’t want to give anything away, but if you want to ask any questions or tell me what it was that happened at the end that got to you so much (I can guess, though!), feel free to drop me an email: renee@rechambliss.com. Take care.

  33. Dariclone Says:

This was an amazing story! I easily became addicted to it and Renee’s voice is so soothing. I’m waiting anxiously for the sequel!

  34. R.E. Chambliss Says:

Thank you, Dariclone. I’m so glad you enjoyed it! I’m working on the sequel and will be doing some more narration and voice work for other authors. I’ll keep my blog updated with the progress of everything, so check there from time to time, if you’re curious about what’s going on with me. http://reneewrite.blogspot.com/ Thanks again!

  35. Jenna Says:

What a wonderful book! I must agree with the other reviews that praise the story, the characters and Renee’s wonderful narration. I thoroughly enjoyed every single word!

  36. R.E. Chambliss Says:

Thanks so much, Jenna! And thanks, too, for the itunes review!

  37. Chris Says:

Great world building and idea. Reminds me a bit of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever by Stephen R. Donaldson, but the world of Trae is definitely unique.

The narration was great and the podcast was put together very professionally. There were hours and hours of story to listen to.

I really wish we got to learn more about Trae and why the world was the way it was. I hope eventually some of those questions get answered.

  38. Happyhousewife Says:

Dreaming of Deliverance is a hidden gem among podcasts. I consider myself a podcast-aholic and can honestly say that this story is now one of my favorites.
It’s one of those that if it were a book in my hand I would stay up all night and into the next day reading it because I would hate to put it down. It’s that good!
I had trouble listening to a couple of the podcasts on my iPod, 20 & 21, as well as the last feed would all skip right to the end so I had to listen to those on my computer. But other than that I breezed right through them.

  39. R.E. Chambliss Says:

Hi Chris! I’m a huge Stephen R. Donaldson fan so thanks so much! The Gap series is one of my all-time favorites! (It’s really dark, everyone, so if you decide to check it out, consider yourselves warned!) Anyway, the next book will definitely answer the big questions regarding what’s going on with Trae. Thanks again!

Happy- Thank you for your reviews! They will help spread the word about Dreaming of Deliverance so hopefully it won’t be so hidden for others. I’m sorry about the tech problems with those episodes. I’ll see if I can figure out why that happened. Again, I’m so glad you enjoyed the story and the podcasts! Thanks!

  40. Cynikat Says:

So glad i listened to this book! i was not sure i’d like it, but thanks to the ratings and reviews i had to give it a chance. and i LOVED it! it’s made it to my fb audiobook pick of the week. The writing and the podcast audio quality and narration are all 5 star. Awesome work Renee. please keep bringing the world these stories.

  41. R.E. Chambliss Says:

Thank you so much, Cynikat! (And love your name!) I’ve had other comments where people weren’t sure they’d like the story, but listened anyway and ended up really enjoying it. I’m wondering if I could describe it better somehow in the description or promo… Probably! Anyway, I so appreciate you mentioning it on Facebook. I’m there if you’d like to friend me. :o ) And thanks again. I’m writing the sequel to DoD and other stories. There is more to come!

  42. Nathan Says:

The comments above are right on the mark. This title is one of the hidden gems. The world building is very good, the audio production is excellent, and the story engaging.

If you like Donaldson’s Thomas Covenenant, or Burroughs’ Mars, then you’re probably going to enjoy Dreaming of Deliverance. I predict this one will be a contender in the 2011 Parsec race and I’m gonna be worried if it’s competing against *me* :)

Excellent work, Renee. Don’t stop now.

  43. R.E. Chambliss Says:

Thank you so much, Nathan! I’m glad you enjoyed it and am still feeling both stunned and thrilled that you not only listened, but have been so complimentary! If I hadn’t vowed that I’d never use the term “squee”, I’d be using it now! ;)

Donaldson’s Mordant’s Need books (The Mirror of Her Dreams, and A Man Rides Through) were a big inspiration for me. The stories themselves, and the writing style are very different from Dreaming of Deliverance, but similar to DoD a damaged woman from our world grows and gains strength in another, fantastical reality. There’s a love story there too!

Anyway, thanks again! I appreciate your words and encouragement tremendously!

  44. Stefani140 Says:

I ran across this book when it was mentioned on Dead Hunt. I loved the narration in that story and thought Dreaming of Deliverance was worth a listen. Now that I have finished it, I simply cannot say enough good things. The characters are riveting and well thought out. The plot was engaging and fantasic. Day after day I woke up looking forward to my walk to work so I could find out what happened! This one make me laugh, made me cry, and made me think in certain parts as well. Being a writer myself, I understand how difficult writing this kind of range can be but this story does it spectacularly.

On a side note, I would love to buy this book despite having already read it. I noticed that it is available in ebook form on Amazon but not available as an ebook for the Barnes & Noble Nook. Since I have a Nook, this was disappointing. Perhaps we could get it published on there too?

  45. R.E. Chambliss Says:

    Hi Stefani-

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and I’m really happy that you enjoyed DoD! That’s so awesome (and flattering) that you want to buy the book. I’m on a list at B&N.com to receive information on how to make DoD available on the Nook. As soon as I hear from them, I’ll take the steps to make that happen. I’ll announce it on my blog, Pointed Squiggle (http://reneewrite.blogspot.com/) once it’s Nook-ready!

    Thanks again!

  46. rose Says:

all 5 stars from me too. not sure why this book isn’t winning awards let alone in the top 10 charts. someone else that listened to it here bought it for me from amazon to support the author and get the word out. i will be doing the same. Great writing!

  47. R.E. Chambliss Says:

Thank you, Rose! I am both grateful and humbled to have your support. It’s so appreciated! Thanks again!

  48. Dawn Says:

    Fantastic!
5 stars all round. I loved every moment of it. Thank you!

  49. R.E. Chambliss Says:

Thank _you_, Dawn! I’m so glad you enjoyed it!

Stefani- There is now a Nook edition of Dreaming of Deliverance! Thank you for asking about that, because I wouldn’t have thought to look into it otherwise. Here’s a link:

    http://tiny.cc/pgr52

  50. Dan J Says:

A very well written and read book — if it was possible to give it more than 5 stars in each category I would. I’ve listened to many great podiobooks by many great authors and readers and would put this in the top 10 stories by the top 5 authors.

Some people have written that they don’t like not having everything resolved by the end of the book but I take that to be a strength and enjoy working things out for myself as I go along.

As for there being some dark elements I’d agree that some authors go too far but in this story they aren’t gratuitous and the struggle with them makes the story. As for the end… well done and I’m looking forwards to hearing more.

  51. R.E. Chambliss Says:

Wow, Dan, thanks for the terrific review! I had so much fun writing and podcasting DoD. Now I’m writing DoD 2 and I can’t wait until it’s time to record again! Anyway, I really appreciate you sharing your thoughts. Thanks again!

I wanted to let everyone know that the print version of DoD is only 10 bucks right now at Amazon. So if you know of anyone who doesn’t listen to podcasts who you think would enjoy the story, you can point them in that direction, or get them a copy as a gift! http://www.amazon.com/dp/1439241694/?tag=podiobookscom-20

  52. Shay Says:

I think you’re trying to torture me! So many agonizing situations!

I don’t know if I love it or hate it ;^)

  53. TerminusVox Says:

Wow, what a tale! Chambliss creates two worlds, each interesting and with its own perils, and a protagonist with a foot in each.

Interesting for genre fiction I found the “mundane” world Chambliss creates within the walls of a prison to be more interesting in its vibrancy than that presented in fantasy. Toward the end of the book I was a bit disappointed that Lindsay spends most of her time away from the “real” world. I realize I’m probably alone in my opinion but I consider it a compliment to the author that the “secondary” setting was conpelling enough that I wanted to see a bit more of it.

There are some unanswered questions that I kept wishing to hear addressed. Where did the bad guys come from? They seem to be “alien” in that they are foreign from everything else in Trae. Who are the architects of Hoven? Although the area takes advantage of existing mineral deposits it’s clear that considerable effort was made to make it both accessible AND defensible. What is the deal with Sophie? Why does she act like a potty-mouthed crazy person only occasionally? (And many more) The fact that I have these questions means that Chambliss has done her job well.

Dreaming Of Deliverance is quite an engaging story and well worth your time!

  54. myhouseinorder Says:

Hands down, my favorite experience yet with a podiobook… and I’ve really enjoyed many of the titles here. I ended up so moved by this story, crying my eyes out after staying up all night listening, I had to write. In fact, this is the first comment I’ve ever left for an author.

Renee, it was such a pleasure to listen to your narration and immerse myself in the worlds you created. When you described a setting, whether a cell, a hall, or an outdoor scene… it was so transportive. I am often confined to my bed, so this was a real treat.

And I felt like I really met some of your characters. I especially love Monique (actually, maybe I already knew her!) and the Sisters; I love how they communicate… so creative!

I also enjoyed feeling Lindsey’s frustrations and fears, pain and joy as she awakened to herself, to hope and to her own strength. Although I don’t relate much to her character (we have little in common), I was able to sink right into her experience and develop empathy with her.

You developed a complex and interesting plot filled with twists and detail that fleshed it out and created a compelling and engrossing listening experience. Thank you for this gift of a book and the care with which you made it a podcast… a totally professional job, excellent voice characterizations, simple and pleasant but non-invasive music, short and sweet intros and wrap ups.

I look forward to the next installment with great anticipation. But as much as I love your narration, I may have to get the print version first, since I doubt I’ll be able to wait for the podiobook to get some of those questions answered!

  55. Traeonna Says:

Funny how you find things on the internet sometimes. I stumbled upon this book because of a Google search of my name (I was trying to find an old post on a forum somewhere I couldn’t remember) and this came up because of “Trae,” a diminutive my friends use. I look forward to hearing this book as I’ve fallen in love with the author’s voice on Guild of the Cowry Catchers (as Dakar).

  56. R.E. Chambliss Says:

I haven’t checked back here in forever, and now I see all of these lovely comments. Thank you all!

Sorry to torture you, Shay! ;) I feel bad for the characters too! Thanks for listening and commenting.

TerminusVox- Thank you for your comment! I’m glad the prison was so vivid and interesting for you. For most people, both worlds described in the novel are quite different from day to day life (thankfully!). I had originally thought the story would be much more balanced between the two worlds, but Trae ended up taking over the story. In future stories we’ll see more of what’s happening back in our world. The unanswered questions will also be addressed. I’m glad you were intrigued by them! Thanks again for sharing your thoughts!

myhouseinorder- Wow! Your comment blew me away and I wish I’d seen it sooner so I could have responded sooner! (I need to subscribe to this feed, I guess.) I’m thrilled that Dreaming of Deliverance made such an impact on you. I love the characters too. The sisters were so much fun to write. I’m going to write more about them and their back story. I’m not sure if Monique will appear again, although I really enjoyed writing her as well. Who knows, though? Anyway, thank you, so much!!

Traeonna- How cool to find Dreaming of Deliverance that way! Had you already heard Cowry Catchers? I love voicing Dakar. And Abbie’s story: The Guild of the Cowry Catchers (http://www.podiobooks.com/title/the-guild-of-the-cowry-catchers-book-1) is my favorite podcast novel. I hope you enjoy Dreaming of Deliverance. The content is quite different, but I think in some ways Abbie’s and my writing style is similar. She also doesn’t shy away from dark situations.

For everyone: if you’d like to read/listen to more from me about Trae and Lindsay there will be some short stories available soon, both as podcasts and as ebook shorts. My blog Pointed Squiggle (http://reneewrite.blogspot.com/) will have the details once they’ve been hammered out. I’m also on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/people/Re-Chambliss/100000988403082) and Twitter (http://twitter.com/#!/reneechambliss) and would love to connect with you all there too!
