Purgatory
Tim Dodge makes his second appearance on the site. Today we begin releasing the audiobook of his novel, Purgatory:
Charles Cunningham, a wealthy real estate developer, dies unexpectedly and finds himself in Purgatory, the place between heaven and hell. Though depressed about his early death, he befriends two other souls doing time there — the writer Edgar Allan Poe and a music-loving deadbeat named Billy. Upon receiving a letter from God telling him he must learn some unnamed lessons before he can go to heaven, he convinces Poe to join him in the portal back to earth. They hope to make up for their past mistakes, but they arrive on earth in the year 2049, 42 years after Charles’ death. Traveling from mid-21st century New York City to Las Vegas, Charles seeks out the daughter he neglected in life, though she is now in her eighties. However, an unfriendly soul from Purgatory follows them to earth. This soul, an employee with whom Charles had an affair and summarily fired, is determined to keep him from winning passage to heaven. She teams up with Charles’ grandson, a debt-ridden gambling addict who has a talent for messing things up. Together, they hatch a deadly scheme to foil Charles’ plan to get to heaven and net the grandson badly-needed money. Charles learns of their plans and enlists his friends to help stop them. Will they succeed?
The only way to find out is to subscribe.
A fine idea. Those who subscribe to a custom rss feed will received all the episodes of this audiobook one at a time. And yes, you can change the frequency of the updates. Those who subscribe to the default feed get every episode as well, but as they become available. So if you’re not watching, you may miss one. But the choice is yours.

What a wonderful and fresh novel. Thanks to Tim for a thoroughly enjoyable inaugural effort. His writing and narration are upbeat and unconventional, and his character development is spot on. Originality is uncommon, and well executed originality is manna from writers heaven, and Tim really delivers the goods. As a long time PB.com listener, I cannot help but be reminded of John Lenahan’s Top Ten All Time popular Shadowmagic, both in excellence and narration style. Very heady company to be counted among indeed. Congratulations Tim, and keep the good stuff coming.

Just started listening to this one and already through the first three episodes. It’s been a great listen so far and I have a feeling the remaining episodes will be listened to nearly back to back.

Just finished this, it was a fast listen that I really enjoyed. The ending was nice but not so unpredictable which was OK. The one thing that I really wanted to see developed more was the relationship between Poe and the girl he met. I thought at the very least he should have sent his notebook or story that he was working on to her before he left.

I cannot say enough good things about this story. I absolutely loved it. I am a big Edgar Allen Poe fan and I love how you incorporated his character into the story. This story was so refreshingly different and uplifting. I think you are a very talented writer and I hope to see more from you in the future. I saw the suggestion from Chris about Poe giving his notebook to the girl he met. Sounds like a great idea for a second novel. I also wanted to compliment you on your narration and the music which were both perfect. Thank you for sharing your work and making it available to us audiobook junkies!

I really loved this story. I loved adding a character like Poe into the plot and making him so completely the opposite of what most people would expect him to be. Most people would approach him like Charles did, it was quite humorous that he was so good humored and very funny. I liked the addition of humor into an otherwise serious storyline. I thoroughly enjoyed it and especially loved the last bit with everyone getting to heaven. I will definately be keeping an eye out for future Tim Dodge works.

Much to my partners chagrin, he has been woken in the small hours by my (unsuccessfully pillow stifled) laughter, elicited from another man talking in my ear…
I’ve been very merry on this auditory cocktail. No froth & neon lights, this is purley for the grown-ups. Full bodied & smooth, laced with personality & stealthy humour, our mixologist has added that secret ingredient that has you wanting more. Find a chair & drink it in …..Fabulous!

Goodness, I see I’m at the top of this page with a trackback, so I guess it’s time I write something here. Purgatory is one of my favorite stories you’ve written, and I’m glad I was there as you shared it with the group and even got to help with some questions and suggestions here the there. It’s no wonder people are loving this story because it was super creative. Kudos Tim; I hope people love the other stories as much.

Thanks, Mitch! The Night Writers (our local writing group, for those who don’t know) were a big help with this book.
