New and complete – The Crypt Book 01: The Crew by Scott Sigler

You just can’t stop this guy. Believe me. I’ve seen people try. Scott Sigler’s latest project is The Crypt Book 01: The Crew

A far-future military/scifi endeavor from New York Times best-selling author Scott Sigler.

It is the best-kept and worst-kept secret in the Planetary Union navy. The PUV James Keeling, a warship that does things that no other ship can do. It is a weapon, and a liability. The rumor is that eighty percent of the people assigned to the Keeling die before their two-year stint is up. That rumor is the reason for the ship’s nickname — The Crypt, a vessel full of the dead.

Those with a promising career, those with connections, those that can can avoid service on the Keeling do just that. But still, the ship must fight, and for that, it needs a crew. The navy assigns the worst of the worst: cowards, thieves, murderers, rapists or those with nowhere else to go, no way to opt out. Your choice is simple: be executed for your crimes, or serve two years on the keeling. If you make it out alive, your record is wiped clean and you get a fresh start.

For this crew of just over 100 souls, it will be the longest two years they have ever faced. What is this ship? Where did it come from? And why, oh, why, won’t everyone stop screaming…

Listened to this on Sigler’s site as he originally released them. One of the best Sigler stories yet and with his usual high production and performance standards. Features sex, swearing and lots and lots of violence so not for the faint hearted (especially “The Tank” episodes).

  2. Belladonna420 Says:

I just listened to Episode 21 – Dr. Erun Wellington, my favorite episode at the moment. The first time Grizzit “spoke”, I nearly jumped out of my skin!! It sounds great! Can’t wait to hear the rest of the episodes! AGAIN!

  3. Beth_Ailis Says:

I’ve been catching up on my Sigler and the whole Crypt (book 1) is ready just in time! Can’t wait to dive in. Sci-fi and horror readers should get to know Mr. Sigler. Check out his other podcast novels, “Infected,” “Contagious”, and “The Rookie”
All fantastic, edge or your seat stories.

Fanfrickintastic! If you havn’t been keeping up with the crew at ScottSigler.com, this is perfect for you. If you have been listening, well, it’s still perfect. Listen to The Crypt – Book 1, and then go to ScottSigler.com and catch up on all of Scotts other works. You will NOT be disappointed.

  5. Rosanna Says:

I had listened to roughly half of these..but very happy to see it here in this more cohesive format. Some are co written with such people as Phil Rossi and Basil Sands. All are intriguing. Some are quite frightening. You won’t be disappointed.
Glad to see this is Book 01..more to come..

  6. olstar18 Says:

Scott I will only say this. GET THE DAMN BOOK WRITTEN ALREADY! Seriously it is inhumane to torture us like this.

  7. John Says:

These episodes seemed somewhat disconnected from each other, and in that sense they seem less cohesive. I’m not sure whether that was the intent, but they don’t seem to fit as a book. I did fall asleep listening to these a couple times, so that might have messed with my perceptions a bit.

That said, I immensely enjoyed listening to The Crypt: Book 1. It is a very intriguing story, and I am already wishing the next book would start to be released. This book left me craving for the joined timeline, where all these separate stories will collide into the fruition of one awesome ride.

oh, also (lol) when’s earthcore 2 coming out? heh.

  8. Johnnie Says:

    Book II Please!!!!!!!!!!

  9. Stacie Says:

I enjoyed listening, but was a bit dismayed not to have more of the story actually ON the crypt. I want to see how all of these fantastic people work together.

  10. Cisco Says:

More of the same excellent type of story telling that I expect from you Scott. Very enjoyable. Also, to each of the authors who collaborated with you, it was wonderful to pick up each of their signature elements. From the Quad Barrel pistol in the Remic episode, to the telltale hallmarks of “the Corps” in the Sands chapter, all of it was much fun.

When you get this done, I SO would love to hear a bonus ep of Bent Wrench. I don’t even care if its just him picking up a hooker, your writing and performance of his character had me doubled over laughing for hours.

You do have a lot of characters here, and knowing you, I’m sure a lot of them are in for horrible ends. Not that it will be hard for you to use them all, but this has to be some sort of a record, Scott. You normally keep your cast’s down to a ‘small’ number.

I must say, “The Tank” parts 1 & 2 were particularly hard to listen to, and coming from me that’s saying something. Well done again, though I will qualify that I don’t inherently like torture or pain as a concept.

I look forward to hearing more, and I look forward to ‘seeing’ the actual Crypt itself.

When is the next book due out?

  11. Jaime Says:

Once again, Scott Sigler has amazed me with his style of writing. I also enjoyed seeing other authors’ styles of writing. One of my favorite episodes was “Bent Wrench.” I love Greg Crites’ books and I enjoyed seeing his writing style in this episode. It made me laugh pretty much through the entire episode. I can’t wait for book II and being able to hear about the actual Crypt.

  12. HySyde Says:

Once Again, The Future Dark Overlord has come through with an audiobook that kept me up nights with the words “just one more episode” ringing through my head..

  13. Briang Says:

    @Sigler,

Love this book and your others.

But I dont appreciate the way you so cruelly torture us by not finishing this series. But I bet you are enjoying it!

  14. Tommy Says:

When is book 2 coming out? I NEED IT! I AM A JUNKIE!

  15. Thomas in Korea Says:

Scott, awesome story so far. I love hearing my other favorite authors tell it their way(s).

So, for us folks and GI’s Jonesing in Korea. Get’er Done!!

  16. Supified Says:

This book is pretty good, Better than I could do, but there are some issues.

For one, some of the character reactions are a little forced, the whole bit with the person telling his buddy to kill himself rather than taking a two year stint on the ship, that is supposed to.. kill you? How is that worse? At the very least he could of claimed it was an issue about honor, but not about fear of doing the very thing he’s being told to avoid it.

Also I realize the book is forewarned about swearing, but the swearing isn’t just in dialogue, it’s in narration. It’s as if God came down to describe a desk and used swear words to do it. I felt it was needless attempts to make the book edgy, which was by no means needed. Sometimes a subtle touch is needed, that is my only complaint about this book is it lacked any subtlety.

  17. Chen Says:

Chapter 9 – “Engineer B.W. Crites” is brilliant! Scott and Greg really should collaborate more. And when I said “should”, I really meant “some horrible and funny thing, that only they can come up with, will happen to them unless…”

  18. Chris Says:

The description should make it clear this is a collection of vignettes that loosely hang together, without forming a complete story. Podiobook marks this as “complete” but its’ really an unfinished work.
If you had been upfront about it, I would not have been disappointed the way I am now

Editor’s note: It’s marked “complete” because all episodes of this particular book have been loaded by the author. The full story arc most certainly isn’t complete. Hence the “book 1″ portion of the title.

  19. Mischief Says:

Supified, you missed the point with the character who told his shipmate to kill himself – he wasn’t afraid of death, he was afraid of eternal damnation. Just before he chose execution over the James Keeling, he said, “I trust in my Lord Jesus Christ”, or something like that – and then he said to his friend, “Kill yourself, save your soul!”, or words to that effect. He was obviously more afraid of what he would be forced to do as a crew member on the James Keeling, than he was of simply dying and going to heaven.

  20. Fairy Reader Says:

I knew when I started listening to this story that it would contain more violence than I like but taking that away I am still disappointed. This is a collection of short stories, not a book! yes, most of the stories lead to that the mail characters are sent to the crypt but that is where they all ends. In the middle there is also a few of stories that are not at all connected to the enlisting of crew to the Keeling. Right now I am just left wondering when the real story will begin…

  21. Amiko Says:

The BEST of Siglers’ stories so far. Can’t wait for the second part to be published.
Don’t know exactly why it appeals to me so much but with this book I really enjoy the precognition that the story will end badly for most of the characters. Maybe I like the characters better than in the other stories.
Great work with setting the scene and looking forward to uninterrupted flow of greatness in decades to follow.

  22. Grepicon Says:

I like where you are going with this, I am already starting to get a feeling for the characters and was in a daze when the book was actually over.

    I need more, soon. Please?

    Get to work!
