Now releasing Conjuring Raine by Maya Lassiter

Check out Conjuring Raine, a new urban fantasy novel by Maya Lassiter:

From San Fransisco’s Tenderloin to the Dismal Swamp of North Carolina, human trafficking, vampires, and conjure magic combine in this sexy, funny, spooky story about Raine Black, a struggling comic strip artist with a gift–her comics come true. Enter Joshua: Raine’s secret childhood friend, an abolitionist, and a vampire. Possessed by a revenge demon his vampire religion can’t contain, Joshua just wants to get Raine safe from the demon, and from the other vampires, so he can kill himself in peace before the demon takes him over. But Raine thinks she can draw Joshua a comic with a happy ending, if she just has a little more time. And the demon has an offer. It wants to strike a bargain…with Raine.

Having grown up in SF, I am almost feeling a bit nostalgic, though the Tenderloin was always pretty intimidating as a kid.

Really enjoying your vampire tale. Looking forward to the rest

I’m up to Episode 6 and this looks to be a great one people! Well written, marvelously narrated vampire tale, but far from off-the-shelf gratuitously violent stock material; a fresh and empathetic approach. Jump on the band wagon while there is still room…….craig

I’m up to episode eight and am really enjoying this novel. This is an introspective and surprisingly intimate vampire tale with original plot twists and nuanced detail that does not descend into the excessive and moronic bloodletting that is all too common in the genre. Adding to the pleasure of this story is Maya Lassiter’s narration which is warm, distinct and delicious. I recommend you give this one a listen.

I’ve stopped myself at episode ten. Simply because I don’t want this to end. Maya you have trapped me in your story! I love your characters, Love Joshua, Love Raine–even scary Steven is intriguing as hell! As a fellow writer I am always hesitant with audio books–I’ve had bad luck running into either the well written but not so interesting or the good idea but not so smooth execution. This book is everything I ever wanted to listen to or read. I love your narration. Love your Joshua voice. I tell all my friends to come over here. Thank you so much for this awesome story! I hope their love happens and as I am a chick–gets consummated on screen–in that oh so beautiful way you write. ^_^

My friend has been talking about this great book she has been listening to. Her and I share a very similar taste of reading, as she as never turned me wrong on a book yet. Once again she was right with Conjuring Raine. I started listing this afternoon, and didn’t want to stop but ending on Episode 8. Great story and great characters. Funny things is, I was listing while I was working, and got more work done then I normally do. (chukle-shhh) This is also my first audio book, so I wasn’t quite sure if I could listen and work. But it can be done! Cannot wait to continue tomorrow, and see what is in store for Raine and Josh! Thanks Bunny another great pick. =)

If you are a fan of fiction, and an avid reader then this book is for you. It’s one of those that you don’t want to put down, and when you do have to put it down you continue to think about the characters and plot until you can get back to it.
This isn’t your typical vampire book either. This story is of a love that transcends generations and a vampire that protects the daughter (and daughters’ daughter from generation to generation) of the woman he loved when he was first “turned” years ago while attempting to help a slave escape her master. It has intrigue, drama, a man’s demon and a woman’s ability to love despite it.
Now doesn’t that make you want to delve further into the audio drama? There aren’t a lot of sound effects just the steady voice of the author as she shares her work in a way that makes you feel as if you’re right there in the room with the characters viewing it from the point of view of either Raine (the female descendant of the slave), or Joshua (the vampire). There are characters you’ll love and those you’re sure to hate. Truly the makings of a good book!
I only warn you that if you can’t stand the suspense wait until the book is completed before downloading it to listen because the anticipation is excruciating!
Love it, love it, love it! (I entered this book on Goodreads as well. The more people that know about it the better)

I’m currently listening to the last chapter of Conjuring Raine and I can’t believe it’s almost over! Your writing is absolutly beautiful and descriptive abd you do a great job at creating characters. I really hope you write more and we get to hear it on Podiobooks.

Superb. Great writing. Great reading. More please.

  12. Jodi Says:

Loved it, loved it, loved it! Excellent dialogue, superb narration and character development. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a good vampire story out of the norm for this genre Conjuring Raine is definitely a “must listen. I look forward to more works by Maya Lassiter.

  13. JaneAtPlay Says:

Maya, wonderful job! I was quickly drawn in by Raine and Joshua’s story. I liked the alternating POVs. You’ve managed to avoid all those self-description problems in so many 1st person narratives and your dialog is so well written, I had no problem ‘keeping up’ with who was ‘speaking’. You have a comfortable, relaxed narration style and nice production quality (although I looked around a couple of times before I realized the birds were in the soundtrack) Looking forward to more from you and thanks for presenting your work int his format.

  14. Samantha Says:

There’s a lot of vampire fiction in the market these days. It takes a lot for a vampire story to distinguish itself, and to my mind, ‘Conjuring Raine’ indeed accomplishes this well. The emphasis on the relationship between Raine and Joshua is what distinguishes the tale – its not so much a tale of Joshua the Fearsome Vampire as it is the tale of Raine and Joshua. Really solid writing and an intriguing plot make this a, if you will, “can’t put down” tale. Excellent writing and plotting, great characters. There’s everything to like about this story, and I look forward to more from Ms. Lassiter down the line.

  15. Chris Says:

Excellent narration and well written story. Doesn’t fall into the abyss that so many other vampire tales fall into. Really original and a great listen.

  16. Carroll Says:

WOW! Just listened to first two episodes and i’m totally hooked.Cleared my desk, folded laundry , sorted files just so I could stay close enough to hear this story unfold. Very powerful characters, esp. Joshua, Ha. Inside Raine’s head , she’s vulnerable and armored . So impressed!!

  17. Shawn Says:

Fantastic story. Ms. Lassiter, I cannot wait to read more of your stories!

  18. Tess Says:

Even if you’re not into the vampire genre, I feel you’ll enjoy this story for its well-developed characters and plot. Maya does an admirable job of letting us get to know the main characters while ably populating her story with secondary and tertiary characters who actually contribute to the plot instead of being mere window-dressing. Her evocative scene-setting gives this story a depth of character all its own. She left me contemplating the meaning of true love and the lengths one would go to in its name, yet without the usual hackneyed, bitter aftertaste of cliched vampire romanticism. I can easily envision this story to be the first of a series. In any event, this book should enjoy a wider audience than simply here on PodioBooks. I certainly look forward to reading more of what Maya has to offer.

  19. Jim Fleming Says:

Maya, very good job! I’m known as a rather gruff old bastard, (I’m 58) and I don’t usually listen to romance stories, but I was literally spell bound with your book… I’m not kidding here, I missed meals because I wouldn’t quit listening to your work…

Pretty racy at times, but under the circumstances, it was appropriate….

    Thank You, Ma’am…

  20. SolidGranite Says:
