Now releasing Bone Machines by John Dodds

New in crime/mystery, it’s John Dodds with Bone Machines:

Bone Machines

Bone Machines

“One of the most promising new writers I have read for some time. I highly recommend his work.” – Michael Moorcock (on the author’s short story, Dr. North’s Wound)

They suffer for his art…

When a number of women are reported missing in Glasgow, the spectre of a previous spate of unsolved disappearances in the city rears its head.

Journalist Ray Bissett is drawn into the case when his daughter joins the ranks of the missing. And ambitious police detective Tom Kendrick won’t let Ray forget a terrible incident from his past which resulted in the death of a young boy.

Damaged lives and dark secrets…

The streets of Glasgow haunted by the ghosts of the missing…

And an artist driven by a deadly inspiration.

Thanks to everyone who has subscribed so far. I’ve picked up there are some double-read sentences here and there. Sorry about that. I will fix.

What a fantastic word smith, you paint with your descriptions, I was there the whole time – I hope this is the first of many. Carole

…huzzah, something grim and gritty for the podiobooks. thank you for supplying us with words for our earbones sir!

  4. Sola Says:

I’m not normally a fan of the murder-mystery (at least not modern-day ones) but i am glued to this like white on rice. Can’t wait to listen to the last few episodes.

  5. Jonathan Says:

This was a great story John – Thanks for sharing.

Very different grimmy and grizzly but yet refreshing.

Nice thing about this in particular you never knew what was gonna happen next or which quirky turn the story was going to take.

Look forward to reading or hopefully hearing what you have next in store. Well narrated.

Grim and gritty is right! And compelling too. I appreciate receiving episode is groups. I don’t think I would have followed the story as well, if it were released one ep a week. I did have to work a little to set all the characters straight in my head initially, but I was also easily hooked by the story. Nice first offering and I look forward to more. Thanks for presenting your work in this format.

    Hello,

Just wanted to thank you for your story (I’m not even finished listening to it yet). Your book is my reintroduction to podcast audio books (for the last several months i’ve been hooked on Old Time Radio mysteries and horror stories and such) but for some reason, I decided to give your book a go. I’m delighted that i get to listen to your tale as i plug my little numbers into my screen at work, and be carried away by your voice (and i’m not having any difficulty understanding you, btw. i find the accent adds to the reading/listening experience, besides, super sexy!)
I’m listening from my little cube in Omaha Nebraska United States (hi from over the pond!). Cheers on a great story! :)
    thank you!

  8. Cisco Says:

Well now, that was a refreshing listen. Very well done. A little predictable in one or two places, but overall, not a bad story.

And for the record, your accent does no diminish at all from the narration.

  9. Graham Pollard Says:

Wonderful, gripping, exciting. yes all those things and more.
I am only at episode 12 (having waited until all were downloaded) but I have to keep listening. All other podcasts of every description are on hold.
    More please Mr John Dodds.

  10. JenM Says:

This was definitly a five star listen. The horor was belivable and yet chill and the characters all read like real people, even Stephan Morale. I’m definitly going to get my hands on Calli’s Kiss one way or another.
The only suggestion I would make is, if you decide to record something for Podiobooks again, [and I hope you do!] consider adding some music between the ending of your reading and your wrap-up. I often fount myself abruptly pulled out of the story and it was difficult to focus on what you were trying to tell us.

  11. Simeon Says:

Very well done. This was an entertaining thriller that was easily as good as any I have read. I look forward to more of your work.

  12. glemak Says:

i just finished this story – it was very engaging and entertaining. john has an accent but it never got in the way for me and in fact much like nathan lowell’s reading style it enhanced the experience – recommended and well done :)

  13. Ivy Says:

John, I am truly enjoying your story. I am almost to the end. I only listen in the truck & it has me wanting to drive around the block once more so I have more time to listen. I find the characters believable & the story line interesting. I love the accent & do not find it difficult to understand. The pacing of the reading is also good. As someone else noted, the transition from the story to you talking was a bit tight. It kinda disrupted the flow of the story. Perhaps a bit more of a pause between or music would remedy that.

Thank you for sharing your work. I hope to hear more in the future.

  14. Mary Says:

I LOVED THIS BOOK! I can’t wait to read more of your work!! By the way, your accent didn’t bother me in the least. I thought it was quite sexy! Keep writing… we’re waiting…

  15. Sandra Says:

A big thanks to all of you who listened to Bone Machines and took the time to comment. Your feedback has been wonderful. Can I mention, for those who have asked, that my second Kendrick novel, Kali’s Kiss, is written, and I’m shopping it around agents. It may become a podiobook or an ebook, or both, at some stage, but that remains to be seen. I’m working on a YA steampunk book currently, and this year Melange Books release an anthology of historical/paranormal/romance and erotica stories of mine called Warriors and Wenches. It’s under a pen name, JT Macleod. I hope some of you will want to check it out, and maybe buy a copy. Meantime, I hope you will subscribe to my blog, and send comments and questions on my various postings. The blog is how I can keep everyone updated on my various projects. But, really, I love feedback and so on from readers and listeners, so please do keep in touch. And if you use Facebook, my writer’s page there is called Twisted Roots. Hope you will “like” it, and join the feed at: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Twisted-Roots-crime-and-horror-fiction/194290097270917. – John

Again, thanks for all the wonderful comments. It may interest you to know that Blackstone Audio has now republished Bone Machines, and the next book in the series, Kali’s Kiss, as commercial audiobooks. They are brilliantly narrated by Robin Sachs (who, sadly, died very recently). Robin is a British actor who has been in many films and TV shows, including Lost Word: Jurassic Park, Babylon 5, Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Galaxy quest, and more. The books, in various formats, are available at all major online retailers, or direct from downpour.com. Thanks for all the wonderful support from Podiobooks, and all you listeners out there who picked up my first audiobook.
