The Plasma Master by Brian Rushton

Nedward Simmons is living a regular Earth life when he stumbles across an artifact from an alien civilization. Its protective powers are more intriguing than useful to him, until the aliens themselves arrive.

Unable to hand over the power he has unwittingly acquired, Ned decides instead to travel with them in an attempt to defeat the Anacron army, which threatens their freedom. But Ned soon learns that his Plasma Crystal is not the only source of mysterious power in the galaxy.

Ned and his comrades must deal with a vast space armada, enemy Plasma Masters, and even a monster or two as they search for a way to penetrate the enemy fortress of Venom and restore peace to their empire.

Good story! The narraration took a little while to get used to but it wasn’t unbarable to me. The only thing that did bother me was I wish you had some music or other way to seperate the different story lines. It’s a little odd listening to the story from Ned’s point of view and then in the next sentence you’re reading it from the General’s P.O.V. But like I said it is a good story. Thanks for sharing it with us!!!

I agree, it is a good story and fun to listen to. It seems heavily influenced by Star Wars, while not being derivative, but then that incorporated truly Classic elements transposed to SF and so a good way to go. Definitely listen through to the afterword as how Brian came to write the story, what he was trying to achieve and his modesty will ring true to many of us.

I also liked his basic story teller approach to narration. I prefer this to overly produced single or multi voice podcasts with too much variation between quiet voice and loud voice/music which is dangerous/painful in a car or with headphones on when you have turned up the volume based on the quiet levels. There are a few, a very few, dramatized podcasts and/or podcasts with music that are done well but in most cases it detracts from the experience and generally an engaged story teller is what I prefer — it is the classic story teller from our youth’s and the youth of the world.
