New release! Sense Memory by Brion J. Humphrey

Any book that can gain a blurb by Nathan Lowell is probably worth trying out. Here comesĀ Sense Memory by Brion J. Humphrey:

If our memory is the thing that shapes and defines us, that informs who we are at our very core, then God help us all…for memory, is a wicked and deceitful wretch.

Thrust into a search for his own sister’s killer, Benjamin Cady flees Colorado and the only world he understands to scour the streets of Los Angeles, plagued by headaches and memories of murder. He quickly discovers that L.A. is not unknown to him, and as his memories of his sister’s death become clearer, so does the possibility that Ben himself may be the murderer.

Lieutenant Jim Banquer has plenty of bodies, but every witness seems to be suffering from a mysterious form of amnesia. Investigating these deaths means he must piece together the scattered shards of a deadly power scheme that goes well beyond murder, and Ben is the key.

Sense Memory is a psychological thriller that weaves an intricate web of doubt and intrigue as it goes, leaving no thread unstrung. A sure page-burner, this story will stay with you long after the smoke clears.

I’m only a couple chapters in, but I love what I’m hearing. Brion is an excellent narrator. His dramatic flair makes his words dance in your ear buds. Once you get to the part where the story takes off, it’s hard to stop listening.

Enjoying it very much. Aside from the improper use of “clips” instead of magazines and the fact that Glocks don’t have a safety that is separate from the trigger, it’s very good. Neither do Sigs. They have a de-cocking lever.

  3. Brion J. Humphrey Says:

Dan, thank you sir! You are a gentleman. Hope you continue to enjoy the story!

Fritz, thank you for the correction! It seems that “clips” has been used (albeit incorrectly) to refer to magazines often enough that the Merriam-Webster dictionary has adopted it as controversially interchangeable. However, as it is certainly not my intention to be controversial, I welcome the information and will raise my standard of research to try to avoid such mistakes in the future. I’m grateful for your technical input, sir! Hope it doesn’t distract too much from the story for you. Thanks for listening!

I love this book!!! I usually listen to my audiobooks while working since I have a pretty solitary job, but man I listened to this one, at work, in the car on my way home, and when I got home I just kept listening!!! Thanks for sharing!!! I hope you have more bullets in your holster to let loose on my ears!!! Very enjoyable.

  5. Connie Says:

Unlike other podcasts of late who lost the way at the end and was unsatisfying this one was great from beginning to end….narration was perfect… Can’t wait for next book…

People talk about making the reader (or listener) care about the characters, but rarely do I get angry when a character is done wrong. Brion has brought the characters to life in such a way that I know these people and it hurts me when they are hurt. Great job writing AND reading!

The more I read the more I’m intrigued by the story. The characters have really grown on me too, I really care about what is going to happen to them now. I find myself laughing a lot too, which is always a good sign. Thanks for making this available as a podiobook Brion, I bought the kindle version a while back, but I do almost all my reading via audio books – plus your narration adds so much to the story. I’m loving it man!

Episode 7 was crazy! This book has my attention. I must keep listening! :)

Brion’s character acting really shines in episode 8. Dang! Talented voice acting.

  10. Debra Says:

Loved the book – narration was excellent! Still, have problem with use of f*** word. Otherwise enjoyed it .

    Elliot, Connie, and Clay,
Thank you guys so much for your support! I’m thrilled you enjoyed the audio!

Dan, as always, you make my day with your constant updates. I’m afraid of when you get to the end and there isn’t any more material for you to comment on…I guess I better work harder on the sequel! = )

Debra, Thank you so much for the kind words! I know I will be turning some folks off with the use of the F*** word. That is one of those things that I struggle with in my writing. I am of the mind that it is sometimes the most expressive way to get a point across quickly, but I also don’t want to alienate my audience. I often tell my students that if they use it, they are showing a lack of vocabulary…I may have to (in some instances) hold myself to that same standard! = ) Thank you again for listening!!!

    Brion,
Just finished listening to “Sense Memory” this noon. Loved it! I want to congratulate you on an excellent effort. The story was gripping, flowed very well and I could easily buy into the storyline. On top of it all you delivered great narration (easy on the music, thank you) with excellent audio. So what is there not to like. Thumbs up, sir!! :-)

I just finished the book today! Here’s the review I posted on Amazon and will soon post everywhere else:

This book dragged me into its world and then slowly unraveled it’s weird mysteries, pulling me along all the while with little character quirks and jokes that cracked me up. It is dark, funny, twisty and mysterious. I could never tell what was going to happen next in the story, and always wanted to know was going to happen next. This is a tale spun from Brion’s deep wells of creativity, offering up something unlike anything you’ve read before. The creative ideas in this book are inspiring. It was a little “The Door To December” by Dean Koontz, a little, “I Am Not A Serial Killer” by Dan Wells, and yet very much something all its own and unlike anything I’ve ever read before. It is very much in the awesome and unique voice of Brion Humphrey. For a first novel, this is one heck of a horse to come out of the gates with. I can’t wait to read his next one, because he’s only going to get better and he’s already a gifted writer and storyteller. If you’re looking for something a little different sprinkled with many of the things you love from other genre fiction books, you should grab a copy of this book. It’s a fun read that keeps you turning the pages with it’s interesting characters, shocking action, and gripping modern story world wrapped in layers of strange treasures to unveil.

Way to go Brion! You knocked your first one out of the park dude!

    I’m a Dexter fan.
Both Jeff Lindsay’s books and the TV show – if you like Dexter – give this book a try.
    I loved it !
Brion did a great job both on the writing part and the voice acting.

For me, a good book (or audiobook) is one that makes me want to read\listen to – not only on bus rides – but also when I’m home, doing nothing, and instead of going to my computer to surf the web – I chose the book or audiobook. This is my litmus test, and this book passed with flying colors !
